Captain Marvel: Higher, Further, Faster

This was a fun film that nicely remixes the standard “super hero origin story” tropes. It opens quickly, introducing a powered-up lead who is looking for a fight. Then it works backwards, revealing more about the title character via flashbacks and fragmented memories.

By the time this galaxy spanning adventure arrives on Earth in the mid 90s, you have a pretty good idea where you think the story is going. It takes a slight tonal shift towards buddy comedy before presenting an unexpected twist at the end of the road trip portion of the film. From there, it takes you back to space for the final act with plenty of energy blasts and explosions to close things out.

Special effects are standard fare for the recent Marvel films. The lead actors seem to be genuinely enjoy sharing the screen together and are surrounded by strong performances from the other cast members.

There is a mid-credit bonus scene and a post-credit scene to reward you for sticking around to the very end. The film is full of nods to other films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well, little rewards for folks who have been following these big-screen, super hero flicks over the past ten years.
